Search stopped being a list of links.
For twenty years, winning search meant one thing: rank on page one and collect the clicks. That game still matters — but a second game started, and most businesses haven’t noticed.
When someone asks ChatGPT for “the best CRM for a small sales team” or asks Google AI “who’s a good emergency plumber near me,” they don’t get ten options to compare. They get a recommendation. A handful of names, presented with confidence, sourced from whatever the model found credible.
If your business is in that answer, you win the customer before they ever see a results page. If you’re not, you were never in the running — and you’ll never see it happen in your analytics.
Making sure you’re in the answer is called Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) — and it’s less mysterious than it sounds.
How AI assistants actually pick their answers
AI assistants don’t “rank” pages the way Google classically did. When they answer, they lean on three things:
What they retrieve
Most assistants search the live web and read the top results — classic SEO is the ticket to even being read.
What they can parse
Clear structure, direct answers, and structured data get lifted into responses. Vague pages don’t survive summarization.
What they trust
Consistent business facts across the web, real reviews, and mentions on credible third-party sites.
Notice what that means: GEO isn’t a replacement for SEO. It’s SEO with sharper edges — the same foundations, plus a layer of “make it effortless for a machine to quote you.”
“AI doesn’t cite the best business. It cites the clearest one.”
— The uncomfortable truth of GEO
The six moves that get you quoted
Work them in order — each one compounds the next.
Answer real questions, literally
Assistants respond to questions, so pages that pose and answer the exact questions your buyers ask are the easiest to quote. A page titled “How much does kitchen remodeling cost in Chicago?” with a direct, honest answer in the first paragraph is GEO gold. A page titled “Our Services” is invisible.
Ship structured data
Schema markup (Organization, LocalBusiness, FAQPage, Product, Article) is machine-readable labeling for everything you want AI to know: what you do, where you are, what you charge, what customers say. A few hours of technical work that quietly feeds every model that reads your site.
Build your entity
Models think in entities — distinct things with consistent facts around them. Your business name, address, category, and description should match everywhere: your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, directories, review platforms. Every inconsistency dilutes the model’s confidence that you’re a real, citable thing.
Get mentioned where models look
Assistants trust third-party corroboration — “best of” lists, industry publications, local news, review sites. One genuine mention in a credible roundup can do more for AI visibility than ten blog posts. This is classic digital PR with a new payoff.
Publish quotable facts
Models love specifics they can lift: numbers, timeframes, prices, named processes. “We recruited 150 qualified participants in 6 days for $875” gets quoted. “We deliver results-driven solutions” gets skipped. Put your proof in crisp, standalone sentences.
Keep classic SEO healthy
Retrieval starts with search. If your site is slow, thin, or unranked, the assistant never reads it — and everything above is moot. Technical health, content depth, and local SEO remain the foundation the whole GEO layer sits on.
- Create pages that answer your buyers’ literal questions
- Add schema markup — Organization, FAQ, LocalBusiness
- Make your business facts identical everywhere online
- Earn mentions on credible third-party sites
- Publish specific, quotable numbers — not slogans
- Keep technical & local SEO healthy underneath it all
The window matters more than the tactics: most of your competitors aren’t doing any of this yet. AI search is where regular SEO was in 2005 — the businesses that move early get quoted by default for years.
